Issue #35: How to boost your metabolism with EMS

What is Metabolism?

It is the rate at which you burn calories known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Broadly speaking, you burn calories just by existing — whether you’re sitting, exercising, or sleeping, your metabolism is converting calories from food into energy. That energy powers your cells and maintains all your systems, from your brain to your muscles.

When you increase your BMR, you increase how many calories your body uses to keep everything running. Broadly speaking, when you burn more calories than you consume, you’re more likely to lose weight. However, in terms of weight management, calories are just one piece of a larger puzzle.

Of cause there’s a lot of variability in everyone’s personal BMR due to variables like age, sex, body composition, hormone profile, and inflammation levels.

How can metabolism be trained?

We have three major energy systems that we can influence with training. ATP is an important currency for energy!

Adenosine-tri-phosphate (ATP) is the center of our energy systems. It creates energy for muscles to work by donating a phosphate molecule and releasing energy (and becoming adenosine di-phosphate in the process). This process of ATP->ADP is absolutely needed for muscle contractions. We can think of it as being essential for any muscle contraction. We can think of ATP as our currency that we need to purchase muscle contractions and further boosting our metabolism.

So building muscle is one of the best ways to boost your metabolism, period. That’s because body fat is easy for your body to store — but muscle is metabolically active tissue. That means your body has to burn calories just to maintain your muscle mass.

Having more muscle mass will help you burn more calories when you exercise. More muscle means more strength and more force production, which means more caloric expenditure.

The most important energy system for boosting your metabolism

The Alactic System

The simplest energy system to describe is the alactic system. It is the system that acts the quickest and gives us the most power. Those benefits come with a cost in that it is short-acting. We only get this boost for short periods of time. It uses ATP that is stored in the cells and creatine phosphate, which quickly gives up a phosphate molecule to change ADP back into ATP.

Within 5 seconds of maximum effort (think a full-effort sprint), your creatine phosphate system is depleted by a third. Within 15 seconds, it is reduced by 50% and within 30 seconds it is basically depleted. As we move past the 30s, another energy system kicks in to create ATP.

This alactic-system is great for heavyweights of 1-5 reps per set or high-intensity sprints. This kind of training creates the most amount of tension in the muscles and triggers fast-twitch fibers which metabolites ATP very efficiently.

But what if you can not lift heavy weights or sprint fast?

If your body is not ready for lifting heavy weights or fast sprints then EMS is a great alternative to train this energy system without the downsides of heavyweights and speed training.

For a long time, EMS training was meant to train only injured and lazy people. But also because of the limited accessibility of only using low frequencies. Visionbody combined the low frequencies with middle-frequency impulses. These middle frequencies act deep in the muscle and ligaments and create an awesome muscle tension that can be used in real training.

Also, EMS training was always connected to a lot of cables and no free movement. But with our revolutionary EMS technology and our PowerSuits, free movement is no longer a dream. It’s the only way training makes sense!

Visionbody EMS impulses create the same tension as heavyweights. It also stimulates slow and fast-twitch fibers at the same time. So lifting light weights with the boosting effect of our Visionbody PowerSuit creates the same muscle tension as heavy weightlifting and therefore increases your metabolism.

We call this revolutionary training hybrid training: The combination of functional training and our revolutionary EMS technology.
